Bio

Laura Emmery is Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Arizona State University, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, School of Music. Dr. Emmery’s previous teaching posts include Emory University and University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Emmery holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory from University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master of Music Degree in Theoretical Studies from the New England Conservatory. Under the guidance of Patricia Hall and Pieter van den Toorn, her dissertation on Elliott Carter’s string quartets incorporates sketch study in tracking Carter’s historical evolution and compositional process. Receiving the Paul Sacher Stiftung Scholarship, Dr. Emmery spent eight months in Basel working with the original sources. She is also the recipient of numerous other fellowships and grants, including the Emory University Research Grant, UCSB Affiliates Graduate Dissertation Fellowship, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grant, and Albert and Elaine Borchard European Studies Fellowship.

Dr. Emmery presented her work in national and international conferences, including Tracking the Creative Process in Music (Paris, 2015), Organized Time—Fifteenth Annual Congress of the Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (Berlin, 2015), Society for Music Theory (2013, 2014, 2015), Music Theory Midwest (2015), West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis (2013, 2014, 2015), Music Theory Society of New York State (2013, 2014), European Music Analysis Conference (Leuven, 2014), State University of New York at Buffalo (2014), Sacher Perspectives: Musicology at the Paul Sacher Foundation—New Directions in Source Study (Cardiff, 2012), Paul Sacher Stiftung Colloquium (Basel, 2012), Temporality: Issues of Change and Stasis in Music (CSU Long Beach, 2012).

Dr. Emmery has several publications in peer-reviewed journals (Tempo, Twentieth Century Music, Sonus, and Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher), several forthcoming articles and book chapters, and a monograph on Carter’s string quartets under review.

Dr. Emmery teaches undergraduate and graduate seminars in music theory, with specialization in 20th-/21st-century works and analytical techniques.
