Santa Barbara is about to take center stage in the international piano world.

Founded by UCSB Professor of Keyboard Robert Koenig, the Bellosguardo International Piano Competition will bring 20 outstanding young pianists from around the world to Santa Barbara, August 12–20, 2028.

Every generation of artists benefits from people and institutions willing to invest in potential. Bellosguardo and UC Santa Barbara share that vision: to recognize exceptional musicians, support them at a pivotal moment, and give them the opportunity to thrive. Through performances, mentorship, and connection with audiences throughout the Santa Barbara community, the competition will help these emerging artists take a next step in their musical lives.

Following an international Preliminary video round, 20 pianists will be invited to Santa Barbara for the Quarterfinal and Semifinal rounds at the historic Bellosguardo Estate. Three finalists will advance to the Final Round at The Granada Theatre, performing with the Santa Barbara Symphony. The competition is open to pianists ages 18–30 and will award a $50,000 First Prize, along with additional prizes and opportunities.

The Department of Music at UC Santa Barbara will support the inaugural competition by providing housing and practice facilities for participating pianists, strengthening the collaboration between the competition and Santa Barbara’s vibrant musical community.
