Benjamin Levy, Associate Professor of Music Theory at UC Santa Barbara, has published In Search of Morton Feldman: A Portrait of the Composer at 100, a new volume he edited for Brepols’ Contemporary Composers series. Published in August 2026 to mark Morton Feldman’s centenary, the book brings together Levy and ten other scholars, composers, and performers to explore the influential American avant-garde composer’s music, interpersonal relationships, and the literary and artistic influences that shaped his work.
Levy also contributed a chapter expanding his research into Feldman’s Jewish identity, examining connections among memory, spirituality and composition, especially in his late works. The centenary has brought additional attention to Levy’s Feldman scholarship: he was invited to speak at a centenary event at New York University and will discuss the book and Feldman’s legacy at the Society for Music Theory’s Annual Meeting in November.
