Independent Study (99/199) &
Independent Research Assistant (99RA/199 RA) Classes

Please note, there is a university maximum for these units as listed here: Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the preceding 3 quarters and are limited to 5 units
per quarter and 30 units total in all 98/99/198/199/199AA-ZZ courses combined. Students are limited to 4 units per quarter and 16 units total in Music 198/199 courses.

Students should register for 99/199 when they are working on an independent project that focuses on their interests.
Students should register for 99RA/199RA when they are helping a faculty member with the faculty's research project.

Students should register for lower-division (99 or 99RA) if they are a first-year or sophomore. They should register for upper-division if they are a junior or senior. They can see their level standing in GOLD. You can also see their level by downloading the classlist in eGrades. The excel file will confirm their standing level.

It us up to the student and faculty member to determine the workload/units registered for each course instance. As a guideline, they should estimate approximately 3 hours of work per unit per week, and can register for between 1-4 units per instance (see the above limits).

Incomplete Grades & Modifying Existing Grades

Instructors are able to change incomplete grades and modify incorrectly posted grades in eGrades. Simply navigate into the correct quarter and class for the listing you are trying to modify. Click edit at the end of the line that lists that particular student. In the record, you can make a change to the student's grade.

Units for Instrument Instruction

Students taking instruction in a studio should register for the number of units based on the following criteria:

  • 3 (lower-division) or 4 (upper-division) units: BM students studying that particular instrument. Students should register for lower division until the sophomore audition is passed.
  • 2 units: Any student who is not in that instrument's BM program, and taking a 1-hour lesson per week.
  • 1 unit: Any student who is not in that instrument's BM program, and taking a  half-hour lesson per week.

Students should choose the appropriate number when registering in GOLD. However, instructors should double-check this number and modify it (in eGrades) to the appropriate number if it is incorrect.
