We are excited to announce that João Pedro Oliveira, Professor and Corwin Chair of Composition at UC Santa Barbara, has received the 2025 Fromm Music Foundation Commission from Harvard University. Oliveira will compose a new work to be premiered in 2027 by the Tempo Ensemble from California State University, Northridge, at UCSB. This prestigious commission supports the creation of a new work by a composer of exceptional vision in contemporary music.

Portuguese-born Oliveira holds several degrees, including architecture, organ performance, music theory, and composition, and has served as a professor and visiting faculty in universities around the world, including Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Slovakia, New Zealand, and the United States. As a composer, he has created a diverse body of work spanning multiple genres, including electroacoustic music, chamber music, orchestral works, and multimedia compositions. His music has been performed globally and recorded on over 60 CDs, and he has received over 70 international awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Prize in Composition, and the Bourges Magisterium Prize. In addition to his creative work, Oliveira is an accomplished scholar, having published a book and more than 25 articles and chapters on composition and analysis.
