UC Santa Barbara Assistant Teaching Professor Dr. Sarah Gibson’s work for orchestra, warp & weft, will be performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at 8 pm PT. Conducted by New Zealand’s Gemma New, a former Los Angeles Philharmonic Dudamel Conducting Fellow, the program will include Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish,” and will feature piano soloist Isata Kanneh-Mason in a performance of Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor—a work Ms. Kanneh-Mason championed on her first album, Romance, an homage to Clara Schumann in celebration of her 200th birthday.

Written in 2019 for chamber orchestra, Dr. Gibson’s warp & weft was commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra during Dr. Gibson’s residency as the organization’s Sound Investment Composer. "warp & weft is inspired by the artwork of Miriam Schapiro," noted Dr. Gibson. "In particular, I was inspired by her term ‘femmage:’ a word invented by her to include activities such as collage, decoupage, assemblage, etc. as they were practiced by women using traditional women's techniques to achieve their art-sewing, piecing, hooking, cutting, appliquéing, cooking and the like.” Listen to an excerpt recording of the work by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, led by Peter Oundjian, here

Tickets for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s live performance on Thursday, August 5 at the Hollywood Bowl are available now at hollywoodbowl.com.

Dr. Gibson currently serves as Assistant Teaching Professor of Music Composition in both the UC Santa Barbara Department of Music and the College of Creative Studies. She has received commissions and performances from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Center, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, and Chamber Music America, among others.
